Vasco Cordeiro re-elected President of organisation representing 150 European regions

The President of the Government of the Azores was re-elected unanimously for a third term as President of the Conference of Peripheral and Maritime Regions of Europe (CPMR), an organisation representing nearly 150 European regions that congregates 200 million inhabitants.

The re-election of Vasco Cordeiro for a new two-year term was held Thursday in Funchal at CPMR political bureau, made up of one representative per State, under the 46th General Assembly of this organisation.

The President of the Government of the Azores took over the presidency of CPMR for the first time in 2014 in the Swedish city of Umeå and was unanimously re-elected in 2016 at the General Assembly held in Ponta Delgada.

In the context of the re-election, the new Vice-Presidents of CPMR, from the regions Norway, Greece, Sweden, the Netherlands, Italy and Romania, were also appointed to accompany Vasco Cordeiro in his third term of office. Moreover, the new composition of the organisation's political bureau was presented at this General Assembly.

In the electoral proposal he presented to the 150 regions that make up the CPMR, Vasco Cordeiro made the commitment towards "the uncompromising defence of the interests of European peripheral and maritime regions and the principles inspiring the joint action, as a contribution to a European action that respects subsidiarity and proportionality as well as multilevel governance and regional power."

The mission of CPMR is to defend the interests of its members within national and European institutions, through the promotion of territorial cohesion and regional power in Europe as well as through the reinforcement of the peripheral and maritime dimension of the European Union.

In this context, CPRM has carried out an extensive effort in terms of the development of policies and influence with Community institutions, particularly with regard to the Cohesion Policy, the Integrated Maritime Policy, the Transport Policy and Macro-Regional Strategies.
