Vasco Cordeiro participated in plenary session of the Committee approving the report on support to young farmers

The President of the Government participated in the plenary session of the Committee of the Regions held in Brussels. The Report on the support to European young farmers was approved during the meeting. It is in line with the priorities defended by the Azores, which are the Portuguese region with the lowest average age in this sector.

The need to create European mechanisms to encourage older farmers leaving the activity and increase the sector's attractiveness for younger farmers, the importance of creating conditions to land access for the first installation of young farmers and the adequate provision of training and information are some of the positions defended by the Azores in this important document.

The document restates the regions' appeal to the European Commission and Member States towards a greater proactivity in promoting the maintenance of young people in rural areas. In this regard, it recommends the implementation of the measures provided under the new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) to support young farmers and the renewal of generations in agriculture.

An advisory body of the European institutions representing EU regional and local bodies, the Committee of the Regions also supports the launch of initiatives to support entrepreneurship, new industries and the labour market in agriculture and forestry. They are intended to not only promote the creation and maintenance of jobs, but also to make these sectors more attractive for young people.

Moreover, the document approved at the 121st plenary session defended the allocation of support to family-run farms, taking into consideration that they generate added value, create jobs and allow the entry of new generations in this sector.

The approval of the report was followed by a discussion with the European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Phil Hogan, who also focused on the public consultation on the modernisation and simplification of CAP, launched by the European Commission on February 2.

The meeting was attended by the President of the Government and the Assistant Secretary of the Presidency for External Relations, Rui Bettencourt. It also approved a resolution on the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Treaties of Rome stressing the urgent to strengthen the democratic link between the EU and citizens, thus ensuring fast and effective solutions to the major common challenges that municipalities, regions and Member States cannot solve alone.

The new EU strategy for adaptation to climate change was the subject of another report adopted at the plenary session of the Committee that ended today in Brussels. It defends that local and regional authorities are on the front line when it comes to reducing the vulnerability of their territories against the impacts of climate change.

In this regard, the recently approved document urges the European Commission to consolidate efforts towards the creation of a framework to enhance the powers of local and regional authorities in this area, highlighting the importance of interregional cooperation.

The Autonomous Region of the Azores has a seat at the Committee of the Regions - a body that comprises more than 350 members from all Member States - since its inception. Currently, the Region is represented by the President of the Government, Vasco Cordeiro.

Its primary goal is to issue reports on today's relevant political issues and prepare legislative proposals in areas related to the exercise of regional and local power in Europe, such as the case of economic and social cohesion, employment, vocational training, education and culture, health, social policies, environment, climate change, energy and transport.
