Vasco Cordeiro opens Corvo Ecomuseum's House of Time, a pioneering project that is "an example of modernity"

The President of the Government opened today the House of Time of Corvo Ecomuseum, a pioneering regional project that is essentially a “laboratory of the study of the island's past, present and future,” being also a contribution to the projection of this island as a tourist destination of excellence.

“Going beyond the traditional museum concept, this project - an investment of about 380 thousand Euros - was developed not only to become a centre for the preservation of memories, but also an information-based and educational approach to relevant aspects about the life of Corvo Island,” said Vasco Cordeiro.

According to the President of the Government, the installation of the Corvo Ecomuseum is, thus, the accomplishment of an ambitious project in its strategic goals, contributing to the projection of the island in the regional, national and international context, also as a tourist destination of excellence.

“I have no doubt that it will be another milestone in the history of Corvo Island and, therefore, of the Azores, being, from the very first hour, an excellent example of modernity,” said Vasco Cordeiro. According to him, consolidating the memories of Corvo Island "by linking them to a cultural and environmental tourism product is precisely a way to achieve this goal."

In his speech, the President of the Government stated that the Corvo Ecomuseum is not just about installing a collection that can be visited in a building, but rather a network system that coordinates centres, resources and building complexes of heritage relevance.

In this regard, the House of Time opened today is the first physical structure, through which visitors can begin their visit and discover the reality of Corvo Island in five moments, which will be available at the House of Departure, the Shared Houses and the Birdhouse.

The House of Departure includes an intervention in the outdoor area of Largo da Vigia and will house a model of the Old Centre of Vila do Corvo, beginning the first contact with the island and its community. The Shared Houses consist of two houses, with a common courtyard, which will be rehabilitated to become the headquarters of various local associations that will have working rooms, a meeting space and a space that can be used for various cultural events. The Bird House will be a meeting place for the birdwatchers who visit the island annually, allowing them to work, socialise and share their experiences with the local community.

“For our part, the Regional Government, we are very confident in the face of this huge challenge of renewing traditional museology, which is based on the principle that the holders of a cultural identity and knowledge should be the actors of that same cultural activity,” stressed Vasco Cordeiro.

The President of the Government ensured that the Government is working to provide the archipelago with a network of cultural facilities and infrastructures that will enable Azorean cultural agents and artists to fully develop their projects. In this regard, he revealed that next challenge concerns the provision of favourable conditions for the cultural exchange of artists and cultural agents to increase their mobility within and outside the Region, through the use of public cultural spaces for the exhibition of their artistic projects.

Vasco Cordeiro added that both the Regional Network of Museums and the Visiting Collections of the Azores promote regional cooperation and coordination, thus offering a global, integrated and regional view on the multiple facets of Azorean culture and history.

“With the ongoing construction of Francisco Lacerda Museum on São Jorge Island, the second phase of the Carlos Machado Museum in Ponta Delgada, and the implementation of the project for the Pico Museum Shipbuilding Centre in Santo Amaro and this project on Corvo Island, the Regional Government will complete a cycle of museum renovations. These interventions represent an investment of about nine million Euros,” announced Vasco Cordeiro.

“We believe this rich cultural heritage - tangible and intangible - that is alive from Santa Maria to Corvo in the creations of artists and cultural agents as well as in public spaces and in our Azorean community is the ultimate expression of what belongs to us; it makes us great as a People and as a Region,” concluded the President of the Government.
