Vasco Cordeiro highlights "historical fact" that there are no cases of bovine brucellosis on São Miguel
The President of the Government highlighted the historical fact that, for the first time in 50 years, there are no quarantined farms for bovine brucellosis on São Miguel, which already happens on the remaining islands of the archipelago. This situation is the result of the effort of farmers, agricultural associations and public authorities.
This is a "historical fact in this constant struggle. It is the result of the efforts carried out by public authorities, agricultural associations, which were aware of the relevance of this fight, and farmers, who fully took on the importance of these efforts," said Vasco Cordeiro.
Speaking at the ceremony to mark the 40th anniversary of São Miguel Agricultural Association, the President of the Government highlighted the fact that farmers and their associations recognise the importance of animal health for the competitiveness of this sector.
The Azores have been declared officially free of bovine brucellosis on six islands: Santa Maria, Graciosa, Pico, Faial, Flores and Corvo. The Region will now submit to the European Commission the applications of Terceira and São Jorge.
The application of São Miguel, the island where the vaccination and monitoring plan still remains in force, will be submitted after the required period of time for the non-occurrence of cases.
This year, the Government of the Azores increased the financial allocation for animal by 22% with the aim of contributing to the Region's export capacity and, thus, boosting the income of meat and milk producers and heifer breeders.
In addition to enhancing various services and the testing provided to Azorean farmers during this legislative period, the Regional Government will increase the funds for the improvement of animal health by 19%.
This public investment contributes to the improvement of food quality, consumer safety as well as to the possibility of exporting cattle and local products to all foreign markets.
