São Roque do Pico ,  April 05, 2018

Revision of Tourism Management Plan to enter public consultation phase in the second half of 2018, announced Vasco Cordeiro

The President of the Government announced today that the revision of the Tourism Management Plan of the Azores (POTRAA) will enter the public consultation phase in the second half of this year. This is a fundamental tool to reinforce coordination and coherence in the growth registered by this sector in the Region.

"Our concern and care now focus on how the development of tourism is properly geared towards ensuring not only economic sustainability, but also social and environmental sustainability," said Vasco Cordeiro.

The President of the Government spoke after visiting the "Lava Homes," a tourist resort consisting of several apartments with 56 beds. The project applied for support under the Competir+ incentive scheme, having been classified as Project of Regional Interest (RIP).

Speaking to journalists, Vasco Cordeiro stated that the revision of POTRAA will provide the Region with a specifically designed tool for managing and improving the quality of tourism so that it may increasingly be a factor in employment creation and wealth generation.

The growth prospects of the tourism sector, as considered in the revision of POTRAA, are based on a scenario that allows us to reach balanced tourism intensities and densities. In fact, they are in line with the strategy pursued, namely with the recognition and consolidation of the Azores as a sustainable tourist destination.

After visiting Lava Homes, an investment of about 2.4 million Euros, Vasco Cordeiro stressed that this project is one of the examples of several tourism projects implemented throughout the Region that complies with the qualification goals for the tourism offer.

"This visit also highlighted a specific type of tourism accommodation offer on Pico, which is not based on traditional hotel establishment. Nevertheless, this island led the growth in the number of beds between 2016 and 2017" in the Azores, stressed the President of the Government.
