Água Retorta ,  August 03, 2020

Resumption of Regional Health Service is on the "right track," says President of the Government

The President of the Government stated today that the gradual resumption of the Regional Health Service, after the first phase of the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, is on the "right track," which allows us to anticipate the achievement of the productivity goal set for this year.

"We are on the right track, as far as this recovery process is concerned, having a very clear awareness that we need to accelerate the pace so that we can meet the goal of reaching the end of 2020 with the same level of productivity as in 2019," said Vasco Cordeiro.

The President of the Government spoke at the opening of the remodelling works of Água Retorta Health Unit, municipality of Povoação, as part of the first day of the Regional Government's visit to the island of São Miguel.

According to him, this pandemic situation "highlighted the pressure on the Regional Health Service," seeing that, for approximately three months, a considerable part of the resources was directed to the strengthening of its response capacity.

In his speech, the President of the Government pointed out, as example, the recovery that is already taking place with the more than 192,000 consultations provided by the São Miguel Health Unit between January and June this year.

"In the current context, this figure is even more relevant, if we take into consideration that it represents an increase of 15,500 consultations compared to the same period of 2019," said Vasco Cordeiro.

"This evidences the effort undertaken at all levels, firstly by health professionals, to recover and restore the access conditions to health care," said the President of the Government.

At the opening of the remodelling of Água Retorta Health Unit, Vasco Cordeiro highlighted that this work, similarly to the opening of the Emergency and Outpatient Services of Horta Hospital last week, was carried out with the goal of serving the population.

"These are moments that, regardless of their size, have a particular relevance for those they are intended," said the President of the Government, for whom these investments are examples of territorial and social cohesion.

"This is what is happening throughout the Region, with investments in the three hospitals, in the 17 health centres and in about one hundred health units that, throughout our Islands, ensure the access to health care and promote cohesion in our Region," said the President of the Government.
