Regional Government enacts new employment contract for firemen that work for Fire Departments
The Regional Government of the Azores created a new legal statute for firemen working for Azorean humanitarian associations and fire departments. This innovative measure solved a long-standing problem that had not yet been addressed by national policies.
A study group was established by a joint effort of the Regional Secretariat of Science, Technology and Equipments and the Regional Secretariat of Employment and Social Solidarity. It proposed a new legal regime that stipulates the rules of employment to be adopted in this domain.
This new legislative proposal, elaborated with the extensive collaboration of unions and institutions that represent Fire Department Associations, establishes a legally recognised profession for ambulance crews, provides for adequate professional training and clearly defines work schedules. Legally speaking, it distinguishes the status of full-time professional firemen from part-time voluntary service in fire departments.
In addition to these measures, a common income standard for ambulance crews was adopted as well as criteria for professional advancement. It was stipulated that workers in this sector should benefit from the same food subsidy that is provided to other public servants.
