Horta ,  March 30, 2009

Public works of 33 million euros will change the face of the city of Horta

Public works of 33 million euros will change the face of the city of Horta

The coastline of the city of Horta will undergo construction work that will forever change its appearance. In the view of the President of the Regional Government of the Azores, the city of Horta will be "re-dimensioned, re-qualified and better prepared to continue being a maritime and cosmopolitan hub. A city that is preparing itself to have a more influential performance in the future."

On Monday morning, Carlos César attended the presentation of the construction project and, after emphasising that this project is the fulfilling of a pre-electoral pledge made to the people of Faial island, he added that  "these public works that are now beginning, estimated to cost 33.5 million euros, is not a luxurious undertaking nor a caprice of the Government of the Azores. On the contrary, Faial island and the Azores can not afford the luxury of not making an investment  that will significantly enhance its economic re-productivity  and its contribution to the sustainability of local and regional development."

For the President of the Regional Government of the Azores, this is the right time to launch the project given that it is possible that, were it implemented later, the Region might not have  access to the necessary financial assistance.

He said that, "among the tasks of governance, one of the most important is to know when decisions are opportune. Given that it is rarely possible to do everything at the same time, one must choose: among other re-productive investments, we opted for this one and I am confident that our judgement is sound."

In 2008, the movement of passengers through the port of the city of Horta reached the figure of 385 thousand passengers, that is, a daily average of more that one thousand passengers that will increase in the future. This is one of the reasons for this investment."

The first phase of the construction project, which should be completed in three years, will be the construction of a new port bay next to the mouth of the brook Ribeira da Conceição where two docks will be built, one with 300 meters and another with 100 meters, a passenger platform, a building for port services and the technical networks that are indispensable to this type of infra-structures.

In a second phase, whose schedule will be opportunely fixed and whose cost is estimated at around twenty million euros, several public works will take place in the southern side of the bay, namely in the port and in the Manuel de Arriaga Plaza, where there will be a profound re-structuration of the area, with the building of several buildings to support port and maritime tourism activities as well as the amplification and improvement of the building of the Naval Club. At the same time and in partnership with the the City Hall of Horta, the maritime avenue of the city will be completely re-qualified.

The President, Carlos César, that ongoing or future public works for the island of Faial are a continuation of a policy that the government is proud to implement. he concluded by saying that "the creation and improvement of infra-structures that are very important for the development of the island are a revealing and unequivocal evidence of the attention and care that regional authorities have placed in the planning and activation of the multi-polar model of regional development."
