Velas ,  April 24, 2016

Profitability of tourism depends on "all of us," says Vasco Cordeiro

The President of the Government assured in Velas, São Jorge Island, that the Regional Government is working on several fronts to provide the Region with the tools that will render the new boost in Tourism, resulting from the implementation of the new air accessibility model, as profitable as possible.

"It is important that public and private entities bear in mind that these figures and this growth did not happen by chance - they required a hard work - and will not remain if there is no prospect of constant evaluation, effort and continuous improvement of various aspects in this industry," said Vasco Cordeiro.

The President of the Government spoke Saturday at the solemn session celebrating the Day of São Jorge Island, promoted by Velas Town Hall. He pointed out the example of this island, which registered a growth over 10 percent in overnight stays in the first two months of 2016 compared to the same period of 2015 and a growth of 20 percent in terms of overall revenue.

"This is another consistent indicator of the merit and good judgement regarding the option to adopt a new model of air accessibility to the Region. Despite requiring constant monitoring and some possible adjustments, it is already producing results on several islands and proves that we have achieved a solution that, simultaneously, protects the Azoreans and promotes the tourism development of the Azores," said the government official.

In his speech, Vasco Cordeiro also assured that the Regional Government has been working to render the boost in tourism increasingly profitable, through several policies and measures, including the Strategic and Marketing Plan of the Azores Tourism that was recently presented. According to it, the island of São Jorge is one of the cornerstones in the development of active nature tourism.

This strategy for the island of São Jorge was recently enhanced with the UNESCO classification of "Fajãs" as Biosphere Reserve, the President of the Government highlighted, defending the need for this award to be regarded by public and private entities as an important, valuable and useful tool for job creation and wealth generation.

"The same is true for the public investments in infrastructures to serve São Jorge islanders and all those who live on this island," said Vasco Cordeiro. In this context, the President of the Government pointed out that, by the end of the first half of this year, there are ongoing works or in the process of being awarded amounting to 60 million Euros of public investment on São Jorge.

In this context, the President of the Government pointed out the following investments: the  construction works of the new Calheta School, the expansion of the commercial wharf of Velas, the redevelopment of the rural and agricultural network, the sealing of dumps, the construction of the new Francisco Lacerda Museum, the renewal of Calheta Health Centre, the construction of a Ro-Ro ramp in Calheta Port or the improvement of Topo Port, whose public tender was launched Monday after a first one that had no bidders.

On an island that is also known for cheese production, the President of the Government recalled the "long and hard path full of obstacles" that the São Jorge cooperative sector had to face in recent years, including several months in arrears in the payment of milk to producers and the non-compliance of various cooperatives, which were endangering a substantial part of the island's economy.

"Today, the situation has changed for the better, but that does not mean there are challenges and obstacles, such as the European situation of the milk and dairy sectors that requires a joint effort, a permanent attention and the mobilisation of all the powers we have and all the resources we can spend," defended Vasco Cordeiro.

The President of the Government concluded his speech with an allusion to the story of St. George, hoping that we all be "able to face and beat the dragons of today: the dragons of dismay, the lowering of arms and the belief that it is not worth it; the dragons of permanent and destructive criticism, the dragons of easy judgement on the character and the lack of openness towards the creation of solutions. Moreover, we must also be aware of the dragons of laxness and the belief that everything can be solved as if by magic, always holding others accountable."

"And the spears we have today are the spears that have always helped us, Azoreans, to win big fights and the major challenges of our history: work capacity and endurance, the ability to persist and overcome, and the desire to win," said Vasco Cordeiro.
