The President of the Government announced in Velas the reinforcement of human resources for the area of Health on the island of São Jorge in order ensure that the local population has a better access to health care.

"We have begun the process to bring another general practitioner, two nurses, a radiologist a qualified speech therapy to the island of São Jorge. Hence, we will create the conditions to improve the access of São Jorge islanders to health care," said Vasco Cordeiro to journalists.

Vasco Cordeiro spoke Monday at the end of a "very useful meeting" with the Island Council on the first day of the statutory visit to S. Jorge. The President of the Government mentioned the existence of relevant data on medical specialties and the travel of specialists.

Vasco Cordeiro revealed that by April 16, a total of 420 consultations and 520 tests were performed as a result to the travel of specialists to São Jorge, an island that currently has eight general practitioners.

Air accessibility was another subject under discussion at the meeting with the Island Council. The new model that has recently entered into force brings significant advantages, but also the need to "improve and monitor aspects so that we can increase the number of visitors to all islands and, thus, contribute to wealth and employment creation," said Vasco Cordeiro.
