Ombudsman for Justice commends support of Regional Government to institutionalised children and youngsters
The Ombudsman for Justice commended the Regional Government for having "taken into consideration" its recommendations in the report concerning "Children and Youngsters Living in state homes and CAT in the Autonomous Region of the Azores."
The Ombudsman for Justice, Nascimento Rodrigues, in a letter to the President of the Regional Government, wrote that "without forgetting the relevance of investments made in material and human resources, I would like to express my satisfaction for the measures taken in the domain of medical care, such as priority status in health care centres, the participation of private entities, even if only complementary, and efforts made in the education sector with the provision of good conditions for studying and effective educational monitoring that is not merely formal."
The Ombudsman said that it is imperative to assure basic care to children and youngsters living in state houses and added that only professional valorisation can break the infernal cycle of cause-consequence.
Nascimento Rodrigues in his letter to the President writes: " The announcement regarding the establishment of a mental health institution should also be commended because it fills a nation-wide lacuna in that kind of institution."
The Ombudsman in his letter to President Carlos César expresses his agreement with the idea that the extended family is the most important resource of children and youngsters that are institutionalised or under the risk of being institutionalised. He also expressed his agreement with the policy of preparing these children and youngsters for parenthood and family life and affirmed his conviction that the policies adopted by the Regional Government will have positive effects."
