Mário Soares was "a major personality of 20th century Portugal," says Vasco Cordeiro
The President of the Government stated in Ponta Delgada that Mário Soares was "a major personality of 20th century Portugal," noting that his death is an "incalculable loss" for the country.
"Given the importance of Mário Soares, this is a moment of incalculable loss to our country for the values he defended before and after the implementation of democracy in Portugal, for the way he committed himself to this fight and for his impact on the shaping of democratic Portugal," said Vasco Cordeiro.
"All these facts have turned Mário Soares into a major personality of 20th century Portugal," stressed the President of the Government, who offered his heartfelt condolences to the family of the former President of the Republic on his behalf and on behalf of the Government "at this time of mourning and grief."
The importance of Mário Soares is embodied in aspects that are directly related to the Regional Autonomy, said Vasco Cordeiro. In this context, he recalled that it was under the "leadership of Mário Soares that the Socialist Party, which held majority at the Constituent Assembly, approved this political decentralisation model on the Constitution."
"This importance is something that also deeply touches the Azores and Madeira," said Vasco Cordeiro.
