Three students from the Lagoa Secondary School located on S. Miguel participate from today to Monday in representation of Portugal in the I– SWEEP 2009 – International Sustainable World Project Olympiad, which will take in Houston, USA.
The Azorean youngsters became eligible participants in this international event with “Rota das Lagoas, 27” project, which was started in the school year 2007/2008 in the Project Area subject. This project was selected in the 2nd National Science Exhibition – 16th edition of the “Young Scientists and Researchers 2008” Competition.
The “Rotas das Lagoas, 27” Project, whose themes focus on lake environment, comprises a multiplicity of environmental, landscape, geological, social, touristic, historical and economic aspects, among others.
The accomplishment of this Project made possible for the youngsters that integrate it to become better acquainted with a multiplicity of knowledge, ranging from Lake Eutrophication, water quality monitoring, water resources, flora, fauna and geology to the cultural and aesthetics values of each lake.
The trip of this Azorean group, which is composed by three students and two teachers, to the United States of America is supported by the Government of the Azores, which is, thereby, contributing to the enhancement of their personal and social training, as well as of the work developed by that team over the last two years.
For the Regional Government, international programmes such as this one raise the prominence of the Azorean Region, and are the testimony of the existence of conditions for one to succeed in such diverse projects in the Region, as it happens with the case of the “Rotas das Lagoas, 27” project.
Thousands of youngsters from schools around the world are participating in the I-SWEEP 2009 – International Sustainable World Project Olympiad, which takes place until Monday at the George Brown Convention Centre.
