The study commissioned by the Government of the Azores on “Teenage Pregnancy and Motherhood” provides measures to minimise the consequences of early parenthood in a school, professional, community, institutional and family context.
The conclusions of the study, which was developed in compliance with the Azorean Parliament 2007 resolution, will be presented at the Regional Secretariat for Health, on Monday at 10 AM.
The study was conducted by a group which was coordinated by Maria Cristina Canavarro, Professor at the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences, at the University of Coimbra, who provides effective guidelines to avoid teenage pregnancy.
This study was carried out, given that the data presented by the National Statistics Service (INE) demonstrate that the Azores have been the Portuguese region with the highest teenage pregnancy rate, particularly since 1984.
The study comprised psychological, social and relational, educational and socioeconomic domains, always seeking to identify vulnerability factor concerning the (in)adaptation of teenage mothers.
In addition to provide a better understanding of the phenomenon, this investigation has the purpose of supporting adequate intervention measures.
