The Regional Government of the Azores decided to increase the FUNDOPESCA assistance it granted to each Azorean fisherman in 2008. Financial assistance for each fisherman will reach the amount of a minimum salary.
The FUNDOPESCA assistance fund is a governmental structural mechanism designed to financially assist fisherman when weather conditions are not propitious for fishing.
The decision of the Regional Government to reinforce this assistance fund has to do with storms that affected the archipelago in the first months of the current year, which made it impossible to fish, thus decreasing the incomes of fishermen.
The extra assistance from FUNDOPESCA will be paid during the month of March.
