The official ceremony of the Day of the Autonomous Region of the Azores will take place on May 24 (Holy Spirit Monday) on the island of Corvo, the only island of the archipelago which had not hosted the event yet.
During the celebrations, which are jointly organised by the Legislative Assembly and the Government of the Azores, honour commendations will be awarded to various personalities and institutions of the Azores.
The Day of the Autonomous Region of the Azores, which intends to celebrate the Azorean Autonomy, was established by the Azorean Parliament in 1980 (Regional Decree no. 13/80/A of August 21).
In 1997, this date was celebrated by the President of the Government, Carlos César, with the official opening of the Hall of Autonomists at the Conceição Palace in Ponta Delgada.
Since then, the Day of the Autonomous Region of the Azores has been celebrated with solemn sessions that were held in Angra do Heroísmo (1998), Horta (1999 and 2006), Santa Cruz das Flores (2000), Fall River, United States of America (2001), Ribeira Grande (2002), Ponta Delgada (2003), Santa Cruz da Graciosa (2004), Vila do Porto (2005), S. Roque do Pico (2007), Velas (2008) and Toronto, Canada (2009).
