Carlos César will propose the attribution of a regional commendation to Fayal Sport Club
The President of the Regional Government of the Azores will propose the attribution of the commendation “Insígnia Autonómica de Mérito” (Insignia of Autonomic Merit) to Fayal Sport Club, on the occasion of the celebration of the next celebratory Day of the Region, which will take place in June.
The announcement was made on Monday evening during the solemn centenary commemoration of that club, which took place in the city of Horta. Carlos César justified the attribution of this commendation by reminding the civic and sporting endeavours of a club that has honoured Faial Island and the Azores.
The President of the Regional Government said: “ In virtue of its antiquity and centrality this club is, simultaneously, an eloquent spectator and an influential actor in the events that have moulded the life of Faial.” He said that the historical and human legacy of the club is far more important than its considerable material inheritance, which will be further enriched with the support of the government.
Underlining the irreprehensible manner in which the leaders of the club have preserved the historical heritage of the “verdes da Alagoa” (Alagoa greens), Carlos César praised the responsible management practices adopted by the club.
The President said, “ Technical competence in the management of sporting activities is just as important as the civic consciousness that ensures respect for the history of clubs that should not be perverted by a facile and immediate interest in performance.”
The President especially praised Fayal Sport Club’s work on the training of around two hundred young athletes in several sports. He added that clubs must instil “ a democratisation dynamic in sports, in the sense of making them accessible to all”, an endeavour which would be a true championship of citizenship.
He concluded: “It is needed, therefore, to be a champion in all the dimensions.”
