The President of the Government conveyed his belief that given the current economic difficulties “the business economy will have to adjust, even more in some circumstances, to the real economy.”
For Carlos César, this means that the Azorean companies “were not adequate to the regional dimension of our economy and there was too much artificiality; therefore, our companies did not have the necessary competitiveness and strength to face the financial and consumption crisis.”
Hence, the President added that this adjustment will continue, causing some problems in the area of employment, which leads the Government to only help people and the companies in difficulty, but also to prepare the future with confidence.
“There are problems to solve in our company and in our society,” Carlos César said, adding that these problems have more to do with the “software” than with appearances.
“This means that we really need more competitive companies as well as more competent people,” said Carlos César, for whom the Government must carry out a very careful action concerning the investment in economy, education and training.
The President of the Government spoke during the ceremony to deliver eleven houses to re-house families in Biscoitos on Terceira Island, during which mentioned the effort carried out by his Government the area of social support.
Stressing the great satisfaction he feels whenever the needs of deprived people are fulfilled, particularly the right to adequate housing, Carlos César also reminded the new residents that they now have responsibilities, especially the obligation to pay the rents, which range from five to forty Euros.
“We are in the presence of households who, without our help, would not have this possibility to own a house, but we are also in the presence of families who have contributed very little. And they must comply with their obligations promptly and diligently,” Carlos César said, stressing that it is a duty for all Azoreans who, with their taxes, have enabled the investment in the acquisition of housing.
In addition to the eleven houses that were delivered in the village of Biscoitos on Tuesday, the Government had already awarded five houses to re-house families who were affected by the storm that devastated the northern coast of Terceira Island in December, representing a total investment of about 1.5 million Euros.
The President of the Government pointed out that in last September the first re-housing phase in the Nossa Senhora de Fátima neighbourhood has solved the housing problems of 73 families. Moreover, 47 families will be re-housed during the second phase which is taking place now, representing a 10 million Euro investment.
