The President of the Government of the Azores praised today the contribution of the Brown University of Rhode Island for the notoriety of the Portuguese Language and Culture, and consequently of the Portuguese people, regardless if they live or not in the United States, and especially of the Azorean emigrants.
Carlos César, who was invited by the University to preside over the graduation ceremony of the students of the Department of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies, said that “Brown University, as it happens with the University of Massachusetts and with other higher education institutions located on both coasts of the United States, is an essential tool for the qualification of the Azorean community in America, consolidating its progress and the success of its integration.”
Underlining that Brown University has been congregating, throughout its historical activity, a legacy of knowledge that honours and enriches all those who have graduated there, as well as the society where it is integrated, the President stated that successive generations of Azorean-Americans have benefitted from having had access to educational services of such great quality, a fact that should be recognised today on this occasion.
The President of the Government of the Azores, therefore, praised the Department of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies, mentioning with particular emphasis Professor Onésimo Teotónio de Almeida by his work in favour of the Portuguese Language and Culture and the Azorean living in America, by his dedication in the preservation of the connection to the origins during the integration process in the host country, and by the his prestige among the New England academic community.
