The President of the Government of the Azores stated on Tuesday that “doing more and better, if possible with fewer resources” is the secret of the endurance of the social support system “at a time when one wants to solve financial problems by destroying the provision of social support.”
According to Carlos César, when social support will no longer be provided by the State or when the support to the private sector and the social solidarity associations will be reduced, “the fundamental rights of citizens will also disappear, which will particularly affect those with fewer resources,” such as children and the elderly.
Speaking during the ceremony to lay the first stone of the building that will house the day nursery and free time occupation centre of “Coriscolândia” in Ponta Delgada, the President highlighted the fact that these facilities will reinforce an already extensive social support network of the Azores, which has grown from 230 infrastructures to 700, in ten years, representing a funding cost of sixty million Euros.
Being primarily an effort undertaken by the Government, Carlos César reiterated the challenge to private initiative in order to take part in this effort by investing in a sector that still needs more works, infrastructures and investment.
“When one says that our business people in the construction sector have few works, the problem is that they have, in many cases, bad works; that is they carry out works which are not necessary, in areas where the potentialities have already been exhausted. They have a reduced innovation capacity and need to improve their market research” stated Carlos César.
Integrated in the Coriscolândia Complex, which is administered by Kairós, the building will include a day nursery with capacity for thirty five children, a Free Time Occupation Centre with capacity for ninety children, representing a three million Euro investment, most which is made by the Regional Government.
