Carlos César considers Grupo Bensaúde as a reference in the context of Azorean economy
Carlos César stressed the significant role played by the Grupo Bensaúde in the Azores and even considered that “it represents, for the Government and public institutions, a reference in the context of our economy as well as an assurance to its development.”
The President of the Government of the Azores spoke at the end of an audience that he granted to the outgoing president of the Grupo Bensaúde, Luís Bensaúde, and to the new members of the Board, which will be chaired by Joaquim Bensaúde, and expressed his appraisal for the relation that the Government established with the Grupo Bensaúde over the past years; in fact, Carlos César considered that a “fundamental, continuous and transparent relation has been established between the Regional Government and business groups of this size,” as well as other companies and economic agents.
With 190 of business activity in the Azores, the Grupo Bensaúde employs nearly 2,400 workers in the areas of Transport, Energy, Tourism/Hotel and Distribution. This company currently cover eight Azorean islands and Mainland Portugal.
Answering to the questions posed by journalists, Carlos César explained that any change that might occur on the priorities for public investment will not be due to a deficiency or imbalance in the regional public finances, “but rather a result of our the present situation we are facing, given that the allocation of resources to productive sectors that generate employment is our main priority.”
The President of the Government stated that with regard to the works of the Mário Lina Stadium or the renewal and redevelopment works of the Horta port basin, and the construction of a cruise pier – which have already started – the Government has opted for the works in the port area of the city of Horta.
“These are the priorities and these are the decisions that the Government has to take in moments such as the present situation we are facing,” stressed the President of the Government.
Moreover, Carlos César reiterated the belief if the measures to reinforce the capacity of regional institutions to cope with the difficulties caused by the current crisis had not been taken in due time, “we would not have the opportunity to support businesses, the unemployed and families.”
Stressing that the effect of reduced transfers from State Budget for the Azores has been safeguarded – which is irrelevant, almost symbolic - Carlos César considered that “the works and investments that have been launched will boost some sectors, particularly the construction sector.”
