Carlos César announces the creation of Civil Protection intervention groups in each village
The Regional Government is planning to create small intervention groups which will provide rapid assistance in each village in the case of a catastrophe or a calamity.
The Government also intends to focus on domains such as prevention, emergency planning and cooperation with the University of the Azores in terms of seismic-volcanic monitoring equipments, scientific studies, the establishment of risk charters and general technical-scientific cooperation.
The measures were announced by Carlos César when he presided over the ceremony to open the remodelled facilities of the São Roque do Pico Voluntary Fire Brigade, whose working conditions were improved due to the expansion of the garage area, the construction of female and male changing rooms, with the respective lavatories, as well as the creation of several storage rooms and spaces for vehicles.
Mentioning that security is always an unfinished task, thus being essential to continue to improve the dynamics, the President of the Government added that “some Civil Protection municipal services should promote citizen training and specific training which is envisaged in the respective municipal emergency plans; therefore, improving the training of Fire Brigades for serious accidents that may happen, such as road accidents with multiple-victims, passenger ship accidents, aircraft crashes, hotel fires and similar situations, as well as other serious accidents. We will also create specialised intervention teams for the external cooperation area, which may intervene in regions with similar characteristics to those of the Azores.”
For Carlos César, the inclusion of the Region in the National and European Risk Observatory Network will encourage the training and information exchange in which the prevention and fight against biological terrorism, as well as the availability of serums, vaccines and antibiotics for certain types of crisis are included.
Stating that the Azores are in the most demanding phase regarding the qualification and the means and resources which are used in the civil protection devices, the President point out that everyone – from the Government’s jurisdiction to the highest level of Civil Protection Service, from the heads and technicians of associations and fire fighter brigades to the mayors and association leaders – should improve their competence level, thus inspiring more confidence and being more efficient regarding the prevention and management of events and crisis for which they are requested.”
Moreover, the President of the Government stated that “these new challenges, which go far beyond the parochial disputes which we often witness regarding more and more facilities and equipments.”
