The President of the Government of the Azores announced on Santa Maria today that the slipway of the Santa Maria port will be renewed as well as the Anjos port, where a crane will be installed to support fishing vessels that operate there.
Carlos César also announced which, in an investment over two million Euros, 13 fishing vessels operating at the Vila do Porto port will be replaced, “by modern vessels, with other dimension and other fishing capacity.”
Stressing that the fish quantity and value increased in 2007 and in 2008 – the fishing activity is growing on Santa Maria – the President of the Government reiterated the governmental commitment “in the implementation of these investments which are important for the development of the fishing activity on the island.”
The President of the Government spoke at the end of a visit to the Vila do Porto port, during which he became better acquainted with the works being carried out there, particularly the construction of a 120 m mooring berth, a 20 m breakwater and a 24 m floating pier – in an investment of one million Euros to be concluded by the end of the year – and the complete remodelling of the refrigerator store and of the fish market area, a work with an estimated cost of one million Euros.
Carlos César also attended the ceremony to bless a new trawler, “Baía da Maia,” property of the owner José Santos.
