Carlos César agrees with exceptional support measures adopted by the Government of the Republic for Madeira
Carlos César stated on Tuesday that the Azores have nothing to object to exceptional support measures adopted by the Government of the Republic for Madeira to support that autonomous region hit by a storm last week.
The President of the Government revealed to have been contacted by the Prime Minister, before the meeting that José Sócrates held with government officials from Madeira, and stated that “the Regional Finance Act prior to this amendment seemed adjusted and the revision has not changed the matters concerning the Azores and, therefore, the Azores have nothing to oppose.”
Stressing that the special circumstances that affected Madeira justify the adopted measures, the President of the Government stressed that “we do not live these issues in terms of envy or accounting the assistance provided to those who need it. Knowing and safeguarding what concerns us is our main goal.”
Nonetheless, Carlos César assured that he will not accept the changes to the transfers for the Region, under the Stability and Growth Plan, without a previous consultation of the Regional Government.
“I expect that the Prime Minister, who has heard various entities on this issue, will also hear the regional governments,” Carlos César added that he will pay attention to the development of the Stability and Growth Plan, particularly with regard to the autonomous regions.
