Carlos César reiterates Government’s support to fisheries, but requires effort and rigor

Presiding over the opening ceremony of the fisheries centre of the Madalena Port, Carlos César reiterated the Government’s commitment to support the regional fishing sector, but demands effort and rigor from all involved in the sector.
“If it is true that the fishing activity has significantly evolved, as a result of the political commitment over the last years, on the other hand there is still much work to be done in order to enhance the extraction and commercialisation sectors at an organisational level so that we may improve the income of the fishing professionals,” stated Carlos César.
For the President of the Government, all these aspects cannot be overlooked, from the first sale transactions until the product destination and transportation; therefore, it is essential that the fisheries associations engage in joint projects, through credible partnerships, which allow them to promote a better distribution of the revenue generated by fishing activity carried out by their members.”
Mentioning the partnerships established between the company Espadapescas, of Lotaçor, and the associations is a clear signal that we can improve the competitiveness of our fish markets, Carlos César stated that it has been decided that the shipowners associations may have a shareholding in the company Espadapescas.
Moreover, Carlos César stressed the need to diversify and stimulate the catch of other species such as, for example, the black scabbard fish.
“In this case, as the Government intends to ensure the record of catches concerning this species at a Community level, we have replaced a producer’s organisation that, despite the available financial resources, has proven incapable of building two vessels, through the company Espadapescas, which were authorised to catch the aforementioned species, taking into account the high expectations and the importance of developing this fishing activity to our Region,” said Carlos César.
Regarding the procession and commercialisation sectors, Carlos César also announced that the Government will support the construction of a new canning factory on Pico that will replace the existing factory, an investment of the same private group.
The recently opened fisheries centre of the Madalena Port comprises twenty-three houses for fishing gear, a ship repair workshop and a building to support training activities carried out by the Associação de Armadores da Pesca Artesanal da Ilha do Pico. This 654,000 Euro also included the paving of the surrounding area and the construction of a car park.
