Carlos César reiterates Government’s commitment to reduce air fares

Carlos César reiterated the commitment of the Regional Government in reducing the prices of the air connections with the mainland, revealing that the revision of the Public Service Obligations is at a final stage in order to  achieve promotional fares below 100 Euros whether for residents and students or for non-residents in regular operations.
“As usual, some have undervalued what we trying to achieve. Hopefully, they will be talking alone for the good of everyone,” added the President of the Government.
Reinforcing the statement, the President said that the Government has already issued directives to the SATA Group to move ahead, in conjunction, with tour operators and travel agents, with the implementation of air fares for tourists, which, combined with the marketing of other tourism products, may be advantageous to the competitiveness of the Azores destination.
“All this has been done, and should continue to be done, without questioning an important tool that is one of key factors of our air transport policy: the existence of an Azorean airline, strong and ready to face challenges, such as severe fluctuations in the international passenger market as well as in fuel prices. It is also important to preserve its good management,” stated the President of the Government.
Carlos César pointed out that despite all these increases, “the inter-island air fares for residents have registered a significant reduction in recent years; the price lowered between 23 %, and 59% in the last 14 years.”
For that reason, he stated that “it is curious that those who complied with expensive fares in the past are now always complaining, despite the Government’s efforts.
The President of the Government spoke at the opening ceremony of Material Plate Warehouse of the Pico Airport - at the beginning of the statutory visit to island of Pico this year – and highlighted the Government’s strategy to enhance accessibility and, thus competitiveness and economic development.
Furthermore, he mentioned the works at the new civil terminal in Lajes, the expansion of the runway of the São Jorge aerodrome, the ongoing works at the Corvo aerodrome and the drafting of the project concerning the expansion of the runway of the Graciosa aerodrome. In the case of Pico airport, various interventions are being carried out in a 35 million Euro investment.
These investments include the expansion of the runway and the new terminal, already completed; the installation of an instrument landing system (ILS), the construction of a cargo warehouse and a fuel park, which are at a start-up phase.
“Therefore, we are always working and innovating to do better and achieve new results. And we will progressively overcome older hindrances and difficulties, demonstrating that doing is more important than talking,” concluded Carlos César.
