Corvo ,  July 23, 2015

Azorean families will have this year 11 new nurseries and three kindergartens, announced the President of the Government

The President of the Government announced today that this year Azorean families will have 11 new nurseries and three kindergartens to be installed in remodelled buildings and new buildings. This investment will benefit more than 700 Azorean children.

With this investment policy in social responses, the Regional Government ensures that "children will have the best possible conditions to follow the training path with success," said Vasco Cordeiro. The President of the Government spoke at the presentation of the remodelling project fir the nursery and kindergarten on the island of Corvo, an investment over 400 thousand Euros.

"If it is true that this response is primarily directed to children and youth, we must also not forget that this type of infrastructures are essential to provide young couples with the possibility of reconciling their family life with their professional life," stressed the President of the Government at the beginning of the Government's statutory visit to Corvo.

Hence, these investments targeted at Children and Youth serve various strategic goals, Vasco Cordeiro said, recalling that, from this perspective, the Region has a heritage of innovative measures, such as the “Berço de Emprego” (Employment Cradle) programme. This is a pioneer initiative at a European level that consists in the temporary replacement of workers who are on maternity or adoption leave by beneficiaries of unemployment benefits.

According to the President of the Government, this type of investment allows the Regional Executive to reinforce territorial and social cohesion in the Azores.
"By creating these services on Corvo, we have better conditions to serve Corvo islanders," which is fundamental to have "an increasingly cohesive and united archipelago," stressed Vasco Cordeiro.

With regard to the social infrastructures for Children and Youth, the President of the Government recalled that 10 years ago, the Region had a capacity of about 7,500 vacancies; currently it is nearly 12,600 vacancies.

The remodelling project for Corvo's nursery and kindergarten allows the adaptation of this infrastructure, operating at maximum capacity, to the current legislation, thus providing all the comfort and safety condition to more than thirty children.
