The National Institute of Statistics (INE), in a recent study, concluded that each Azorean family spends an average of 875 Euros per year in cultural and entertainment activities. This study shows that the region of the Azores is one of the four Portuguese regions in Portugal with the highest levels of spending in this domain.
According to INE, this study is based on data regarding family expenses, collected in 2005 and 2006. Families in the regions of Lisbon, Algarve and northern Portugal spent more on culture and entertainment than those in the Azores.
Families from the archipelago of Madeira, the central region of Portugal and Alentejo spend less on culture and entertainment than Azorean families.
Data from the INE study also indicates that Azorean municipalities are among those that spend the most in cultural activities and sports.
In 2007, the 19 Azorean municipalities spent an average of 12,1 per cent of their budgets on culture and entertainment, only being surpassed by the municipalities of Algarve and Alentejo.
