Azorean Gymnast Sara Silva reaches silver medal in Austrian tournament

The Azorean athlete Sara Silva obtained the second best classification in the Aerobic Gymnastics International Open that took place, last week, in Vienna, Austria.

Sixteen countries were represented in the competition with nearly 470 athletes, having the 13-year-old athlete of Corpore Ginásio obtained the silver medal in the category of individual feminine of the youthful level.

The proof was won by the Russian Anna Malysheva by a difference of only 0,150 points, having competed, in this category, 76 gymnasts of different countries.

In juniors (athletes of the 15 to 17 years old), Andreia Simão obtained the 12th place among 40 gymnasts in a proof won by the athlete Mónika Gerzova from the Czech Republic, followed by Dora Lendvay from Hungary.

Sara Sardinha, another Azorean athlete who recently obtained the “High Competition Statute”, reached the 5th place among 28 gymnasts.

Trained by the teacher Alexandra Barroso, of Corpore Ginásio, the teacher was international judge and chief of delegation in the above-mentioned proof.

As the teacher said, it was with “an enormous joy” that the group returned from the international tournament, since “the objectives to which they had been proposed were surpassed”.

“We will keep on working to take even more Azorean gymnasts to international proofs, if we manage to reach one of our next goals: to set up the gymnastics exercisable in a bigger area since the new International regulations so demand it from January ”, she added.

By the end of the year, the Government of the Azores is going to invest a global value of 148 thousand euros in the support to the high competition in the Region, being currently 14 athletes in the category of high competition distance and 27 regional young talents.
