At the start-up of the works for the new Angra Library, Carlos César says that the Government intends to carry on with the enhancement of culture
Carlos César presided this afternoon over the ceremony of laying of the first stone for the construction of the new Angra do Heroísmo Public Library and Regional Archive, which he considered a landmark of great significance for the city and the local cultural milieu.
The investment, which reaches 13 million Euros, is integrated in an expansion and renewal plan aimed to the cultural infrastructures network that the Government, despite the economic and financial crisis which also affects the Azores, has been implementing, thus valorising the cultural sector.
For the President of the Government, the new Library – thanks to its vast collection and its modern architectural project – “will bring to the Angra do Heroísmo historic centre a qualified testimony with regard to the contemporaneity, the 21st century artistic creation that the Angra inhabitants know how to develop very well, being able to articulate it with their traditions in a wisely manner.”
Carlos César said that the main Governmental priorities are the dynamic balance between the defence and valorisation of the cultural heritage, support to artistic creation, structuring the territory with cultural equipments and networks, the promotion of artistic education and audience training and the national and international promotion of Azorean culture. He added that the Government has been acting in accordance to these priorities during its legislative period.
He mentioned this year’s MusicAtlântico season, which will comprise all Islands, including various initiatives and having always in mind the concern for the decentralisation and the participation of a large number of Regional cultural agents, and the attention given to different sectors of the Azorean culture.
“Look at the care regarding the promotion of Azorean icons, belonging to our culture, such as Iberian organs and philharmonic bands, for which the Government has created a comprehensive program to support the reconversion of their means of musical training, through the promotion of workshops for instructors and conductors, and the modernisation of their repertoire,” said Carlos César.
The President of the Government assured that the way how cultural investment is regarded in the Azores has changed significantly over the last decade, making reference to the works in libraries, museums, cultural centres and other equipments. He stressed that “all these projects reflect the importance of the investments that will certainly bear fruit in the present moment and for the forthcoming generations.”
