Flores Museum

Flores Museum is a multi-centered institution under the administration of the Regional Directorate for Culture. The Museum comprises Casa Pimentel de Mesquita, Fábrica da Baleia and São Boaventura Convent, where it has its offices.

Fábrica da Baleia do Boqueirão (Boqueirão Whale Factory) was ordered built by the Lisbon-based industrial magnate Francisco Marcelino dos Reis to process whale oil. The factory was represented locally by José Jacinto Mendonça Flores. The first works began in October 1941 and it started operations in the summer of 1944.

Casa Pimentel de Mesquita was a private house that the Pimentel de Mesquita family presumably built in the middle of the seventeenth century, and remained in the family until the end of the nineteenth century. The well-known benefactor of needy causes António Vicente Peixoto Pimentel was born in the house.

The property was bought by the then Regional Directorate for Cultural Affairs at the start of the nineteen eighties to install Flores Museum there. The property was renovated and it opened to visitors at the end of 1986. The house is divided into various rooms that are furnished with pieces from all over Flores, mostly from the 18th and 19th centuries, generally made from cedar, yellowwood and mahogany.

São Boaventura convent and church originate from a deed of donation by Father Inácio Coelho, dated 1641. The Franciscans inhabited the buildings until the advent of liberalism. António Vicente Peixoto Pimentel bought the convent in 1873 in order to donate it to Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Santa Cruz das Flores, so that this charitable welfare organisation could set up a hospital and industrial asylum for destitute children. The building continued to serve as a home for this purpose until the end of the nineteen sixties. Then it was converted into a school, and in 1993, after renovation, it reopened as part of Flores Museum.
