Carlos Machado Regional Museum

Carlos Machado Regional Museum

The Carlos Machado Regional Museum is sited in the former Santo André Convent, the first patron saint of the city of Ponta Delgada.

This building dates back to the sixteenth century. It was founded by Diogo Vaz Carreiro and his wife Beatriz Rodrigues Camelo in 1567, and handed over definitively to the feminine order of S. Francisco, in 1577. It was the second Clarissas convent to be built in Ponta Delgada, following the construction of Nossa Senhora da Esperança Convent.

The building is one of the most beautiful examples of convent architecture in Ponta Delgada. It has undergone various interventions over the centuries, before being adapted to a museum, in 1930.

In the building you can see the convent circuit, the cloisters, particularly the ancient gate, the visiting rooms, the high chancel, low chancel and the church, the facade of which has magnificent decoration in volcanic stone, in the image of eighteenth and nineteenth century style. The stonework is set in relief against the eighteenth century windows. Inside the single nave church the lateral walls and the vaulted ceiling are covered with paintings, carried out in 1820. The altars, pulpit and gold engravings are from the same era.
