Angra do Heroísmo ,  March 25, 2010

Angra Museum displays “Boats with Stories”

The Angra do Heroísmo Museum will open to the public an exhibition titled as “Boats with Stories” (Barcos com Histórias) at the sala de Oportunidades from March 26 to June 9. This exhibition consists of a set of 23 boat models made in different materials, which were selected according to the ability to evoke story of glory, courage and adventure. In addition to the magnificent miniature replica of the “Príncipe real” ship, the exhibition also includes a “RMS Queen Mary” replica, the British ocean liner that is said to be haunted by ghosts; an “Espadarte” model, a whaling boat from Pico that witnessed stories of bravery lived by Azoreans and a humble plastic reproduction of “Black Falcon” that evokes the fabulous world of Pirates of the Caribbean.

The vessels currently in exhibition are part of the Nautical collection of the Angra do Heroísmo Museum which was founded in 1949. Despite a slow growth over the following thirty years, the collection grew considerably in 1979 with the purchase of 102 vessel replicas that include: warships, transport ships, recreation, training vessels, fishing vessels, rowing vessels, sailing vessels, coastal vessels, yachts, an ex-voto boat model and other smaller replicas in glass bottles or in glass display cases. Some of the models in exhibition have been restored by two trainees under the Eurodyssey programme.

The opening of the “Boats with Stories” exhibition will take place next Friday, March 26, at 10am, counting upon the presence of a group of children from the “O Carrocel” school that will participate in a “Treasure Hunt.”

In addition to this activity addressed at pre-school children, the Education Service of the Angra do Heroísmo Museum will organise a writing workshop titled as “A ver navios” (Seeing ships) during the exhibition period. Guided tours as well as the participation in workshops, which are mainly address at a school public, should be schedules by telephone 295213147 or via email mailto:ana.ls.almeida@azores.gov.pt
