Azorean Government marks International Migrants Day

The Government of the Azores marks Friday, December 16, the International Migrants Day with an initiative that includes musical performances and intercultural interaction to promote dialogue and sharing of migratory experiences.

The programme to mark this date takes place at Teatro Micaelense in Ponta Delgada, starting at 7 PM. It will include the performances of the Regional Conservatory of Ponta Delgada, the Association of São Miguel "Cantadores" (Singers), the Coro em vários Sotaques (choir) - "You exist, You are Important" project. Artists Ciro Costa and Rafael Carvalho will also take part in the event.

The initiative is promoted by the Government of the Azores, through the Regional Directorate for Communities, in partnership with AIPA - Azores Immigrant Association and Cresaçor -Regional Solidarity Economy Cooperative. It aims to stimulate and disseminate cultural diversity in the archipelago by providing a space for dialogue, socialisation and sharing of migration experiences.

In addition to the intercultural gathering, the celebrations also include the launch of the Guide to the Rights and Duties of Immigrants by Cresaçor.

This initiative falls within the Regional Government's policy to promote the relation and understanding between different peoples and cultures living in the archipelago, thus encouraging and promoting interculturalism. The event also pays tribute to life path of all migrants.

Proclaimed in 2000 by the United Nations General Assembly, the International Migrants Day aims to raise the awareness of the international community for the defence migrants' rights worldwide.
