The production of native plants is fundamental to the restoration and extension of areas of priority habitats.
In the 1990’s, DRRF (Regional Management of Forests), through the Forestry Services of Nordeste, started the production of endemic woody species. Trial and improvement of the infrastructures allowed increase in production and quality of produced species. Near the headquarters of the Services, the plant nursery which is included in the Recreational Forest Reserve of Nordeste can be visited, as well as the plant nurseries of the Recreational Forest Reserve of Furnas. With respect to biodiversity, the plants produced are later used in reforestation projects, in management plans for watersheds and in road embankments, among others.
As part of the LIFE “Sustainable Laurel Forest” project, a plant nursery and greenhouse were built, in the village of Povoação, to produce thousands of endemic plant specimens to be used in the restoration of the forest, such as the Azorean Holly (Ilex azorica), Azorean Cherry (Prunus azorica), Azorean Blueberry (Vaccinium cylindraceum), Azorean Laurel (Laurus azorica), Picconia azorica, Azorean Candleberry Tree (Morella faya), Azorean Heather (Erica azorica), Buckthorn (Frangula azorica), Azorean Laurustinus (Viburnum treleasei) and Hawkbit (Leontodon sp.).
