São Pedro de Nordestinho

São Pedro Nordestinho was established as a parish in 2001. Currently it has about 273 inhabitants. The parish was named after the original village, Nordestinho - which is the diminutive of the county of Nordeste - and in honor of its patron, São Pedro.

What to see in the parish:

* Church of São Pedro
This church dates back to the beginning of the 16th century and belonged to Sebastião Pereira. It is currently one of the three oldest churches - as well as one of the smallest - in the county.  It is located on Rua de São Pedro. The façade is inscribed with the date "1764", date of its reconstruction.

* The Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Pranto
The Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Pranto is a temple of great religious devotion. It is a simple hermitage built in 1523.  It is located on a flat pasture overlooking the sea.  The entrance path is tiled with the steps of Via Sacra. Its construction is associated the great earthquake that struck the island in 1522 and the outbreak of plague that followed.

* Triato of the Holly Spirit
“Triatos of the Holy Spirit” are constructions associated with the festivities in honor of the Holy Spirit, intended to display the symbols of the Holy Spirit, including the royal crown surmounted by a dove, flag, scepter, traditional masts. They are built in a rectangular one floor plan. Located on Rua do Burguete, it is topped by one of the symbols of the Holy Spirit, the crown, carved in basaltic rock.

* Fountains
The fountains played a very important role in people's daily life. In a not too distant past, there were no sources of tap water to supply several localities. There are six fountains in São Pedro Nordestinho:

1. Located on Rua da Igreja. The fountain is white with a green frame, basaltic rock base in and two spouts of water.
2. Located on Rua Padre Diniz da Luz, in a small square of the street. Arch structure built in basaltic rock, forming a niche decorated with white tiles and small paintings. Along the structure are also two benches of basalt.
3. Located on Rua do Canto da Cruz,  away from the urban area. It is an arch structure, built in basaltic rock forming a niche decorated with white tiles, flanked by two benches also in basaltic rock.
4. Located on Rua da Igreja, in a recess of the street. It is an arch structure built in basaltic rock, decorated with white tiles and flanked by two basalt benches.
5. Located on Rua Abel Dinis, in a recess of the street. It is an arch structure built in basaltic rock, forming a niche decorated with white tiles, flanked by two basalt benches.
6. Located on Rua do Canto da Cruz. It is an arch structure with a painting of São João and two benches in basaltic rock.

* Bandstand

The bandstand is used to shelter music bands during concerts, festivals and other events.  It is a symbol of celebration and remains, to this day, an important stage for performances to many communities. Located in the public garden, it was opened on 25 June, 1988. Located on Rua de São Pedro. It has a tiled roof and stair access.

* Pocinha of Nossa Senhora do Pranto
Pocinha of Nossa Senhora do Pranto is a stone chapel. Legend says that, during its construction, in 1523, a water spring appeared inside the hermitage, to quench the thirst of the workers and dried out as soon as the construction was finished.

* Public Garden of Rua de São Pedro
Pleasant garden, located  on Rua de São Pedro, with a bandstand in the center, benches, covered  with flowerbeds and cobblestone paths .Both the public garden and the bandstand were inaugurated on 25 June, 1988.

* Picnic park from Baião
Situated along the coast, this Picnic park has haystacks, grills, tables, benches in stone and restrooms.

* Ethnographic Museum of São Pedro Nordestinho
Located on Rua do Canto da Cruz, the museum exhibits a number of local ethnographic pieces, including farm implements, antique furniture and small decorative objects.
