Santo António Nordestinho

Santo António Nordestinho was established as parish in 2002. It has about 255 inhabitants. The name of the parish was given in honor to its respective patron and the parish to which he belonged, which is the diminutive of the county, Nordeste.

From this parish is possible to have magnificent views over the northern coast of the island, starting with the viewpoint of Borda da Ladeira, along the Regional Road. Besides the splendid view, this is a great place to watch the sunset.

The center of the parish also offers a set of services, from restoration to regional crafts, exposed and for sale in the Cultural Center of Padre Manuel Raposo.

What to see in the parish:

* Church of Santo António Nordestinho
This church was built by Padre Manuel Raposo and the people of the locality, in 1898. It is a mix of Gothic and Manueline styles with exemplary frontispiece. It is one of the most beautiful religious temples of the island of São Miguel. It bears an inscription on the door of the tower, "1918".

* Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Fátima
Located in Lugar do Espigão, this was the first chapel built in this county under the invocation to Nossa Senhora de Fátima. During the celebrations of 13th May a mass is celebrated  in this chapel, with the participation of many locals and islanders of the nearby parishes.

* Triato of the Holy Spirit
“Triatos of the Holy Spirit” are constructions associated with the festivities in honor of the Holy Spirit, intended to display the symbols of the Holy Spirit, including the royal crown surmounted by a dove, flag, scepter, traditional masts. They are built in a rectangular one floor plan. Located on Rua do Calvo.  The façade is basaltic rock carved with one of the symbols of the Holy Spirit, the crown.

* Fountains
The fountains played a very important role in people's daily life. In a not too distant past, there were no sources of tap water to supply several localities. There are seven fountains in Santo António Nordestinho:

Located on  the Regional Road.  Bears the the inscriptions "1849" and "CM". The structure is white with a frame crafted in basaltic rock.
2. Located  on Rua do Calvo.  It is white and gray and the basin is built on basalt rock.
3. Located on the Regional Road.  Bears the inscriptions "1929" and "CMA".  It is white with a dark gray frame. The basin is made of basaltic rock.
4. Located in the zone of Espigão.  Bears the inscriptions "CM" and "1931". The basin is built in basaltic rock . The painting focuses on white and dark gray, forming a frame.
5. Located on Rua Padre Moniz. Built in stone   and inserted into a wall, forming a niche.
6. Located on the Regional Road. Bears the inscriptions "1920" and "CM" carved in basaltic rock. White structure with gray frame and basin built in basaltis rock.
7. Located  on Rua da Vila Nova. Structure with a rectangular shape and basin built in basaltic rock.

* Bandstand
The bandstand is used to shelter music bands during concerts, festivals and other events.  It is a symbol of celebration and remains, to this day, an important stage for performances to many communities.  It is located in the Garden Gregório Macedo and has access stairs and tiled roof.

* Old Sinks
The sinks or washing tanks are vestiges of the past. When the urbanization intensified, cities built public sinks for people without great possessions, so that they didn’t had to walk to the streams. Located on Rua da Vila Nova, it is currently out of use.

* Viewpoint of Borda da Ladeira
The viewpoint is located along the Regional Road. From this pleasant site one can admire Pico da Vara, on the background, and the Topo da Bretanha that, from this perspective, looks like a crocodile.

* Public Garden of Gregório Macedo
Located on Rua da Vila Nova, covered with cobblestone, lawns and flowerbeds, trees to provide shade, as well as benches and a bandstand.

* Cultural Centre Padre Manuel Raposo
In this centre, find artisanal embroidery flags of the Holy Spirit, covers and cushions of Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres, among other crafts.
