Other religious celebrations - Pilgrimages

The Pilgrims of São Miguel are Catholic groups organized by villages and intend to visit the largest number of churches and chapels on the island during the time of Lent, singing and praying along the way. Each group must leave on the first or second week of Lent: the first ones leave on the first weekend following Ash Wednesday and the last ones should enter their villages at the beginning of Easter Triduum, that is, Holy Thursday.

The route is followed clockwise, that is, always keeping the sea on the left.

Groups leave before dawn and enter each town after sunset to overnight.

The Pilgrims intend to do penance for the sins of others and themselves, praise and thank the Lord for the Graces received and beg for peace and blessings of God for humanity, for the Church, for the Diocese and for their families.
