The award's name was inspired in one of the most beautiful Azorean endemic flowers existing in all the islands. It's a regional award created by the Azorean Government, through the environment and the tourism departments.

Miosotis comes from the name of a plant present in all the islands of the Azores, which holds a special status: the endemism. It means that this plant came naturally, and without any human intervention, in the Azores and no other place on the planet, being a rarity worldwide. However the Azores have a total of 59 species of endemic plants.

The scientific name of this plant is Myosotis maritima, commonly known as Do not forget me. It is a herbaceous up to 20 cm tall, with alternate, simple, fleshy and hairy leaves, presenting flowers in little dense summits with 5 light or white blue petals. It is usually associated with coastal habitats on rocks below 50 m, but may occur on the slopes and cliffs above this altitude. Populations are rare, extending sometimes by tens or even hundreds of meters, albeit sparsely, according to the SIARAM (click here for more information).

The five petals of this plant represent the 5 levels of  the award. The name not forget me want to be a motto for all who visit the Azores, for its natural rarities and oddities, with minimal impact. This flower is thus a symbol of balance between the natural and the human component as the target for tourist enterprises that exhibit this award.
